You may not have been hacked at all. Let me explain. You can change email headers so that it "appears" to have come from someone else.
A spammer may have done that and used your email as the sender of his spam. You will get lots of hate email from people thinking that you spammed them but thats the only problem you will have.

I think if u are getting the failed delivery notices then ur system has been compromised...
Anti-virus may not find it...this is ussually a trojan/worm type of infection...
I would look for a online trojan scanner or see if ur anti virus has a trojan add-on..........
